Starting Route 2 A at the interestion (University Avenue, College Road, Farmers Loop, and Schandlar Drive) proceed west up the hill (Schandlar Drive). The intersection at the top is the best access to the main part of the campus. Proceed pass the interestion to continue on route 2A. At milepost .8 the road forks. Go right (up the hill to the University Museum) or left to continue on Bicycle Route #2. Milepost 1.4 takes you to Georgeson Botanical Gardens. About mile 2 the route changes from a wide shoulder along the road to a gravel bike path. At about mile 2.1 is a short path that leads to Smith Lake, which provides great bird watching from April thru September.
At mile 2.5 the gravel bike path, which is paralleling Sheep Creek Road, crosses Miller Hill Road. To continue on bike route 2A turn right (East) on Miller Hill Road. ( Note: The next 2.5 miles follows Miller Hill Road and Yankavich Road. Although local bikers commonly use both these roads there is not an adequate shoulder for biking). After ascending up Miller Hill for .8 of mile turn right at the top of the hill onto Yankavich Road. A quarter of mile down Yankavich Road (on the left side) is the University Large Animal Farm. A great opportunity to view Musk Ox and Caribou. Yankavich Road dead ends into Ballaine Road. Here you take a right and proceed for about 100 yard and take another right on your on the paved Bicycle Path (along Farmer Loop Road) that take you back to were you started.
Access To Bicycle Route 2A
From the Downtown Visitors Center on 1st Avenue proceed over the Cushman Street Bridge and follow Illinois Ave to where it intersects College Road. (3rd traffic light past the bridge). Cross College Road and turn left and you're on Bicycle Route #1. Continue East on College Road for approximately 3.5 miles to the interestion of University Avenue, College Road, Farmers Loop and Schandlar Drive. This interestion is the starting point of Bicycle Route 2A.
From Pike's Waterfront Lodge, Princess Hotel located on Hoselton Road proceed North (toward town) down Hoselton Road, under the Bridge the road curves East and becomes Boat Street. Passing the River's Edge Resort proceed down Boat Street to the light (Airport Road) and continue East for one block to the interestion of University Avenue and Airport Way. Turn left and proceed North down University Avenue for two traffic lights. This will bring you to Bicycle Route 2A at the intersection of four roads; University Avenue, College Road, Farmers Loop and Schandlar Drive.
From the University of Alaska proceed down the hill via Schandlar Drive to the intersection of University Avenue, College Road and Farmers Loop, which is located on Bicycle Route 2A.
