From the interestion of Ballaine Road and Goldstream Road (The Vallata Restaurant), proceed northeast on Goldstream Road for 2.3 miles. You'll see a turn off on the left side (north side) of the road just before Buck Road, which is on the opposite side of the road. The trail, which is not marked, will be obvious from the parking area.
Points Of Interest:
Both the Big Eldorado Creek portion of the trail and the Water Pack Trail existed as important transportation routes in the very early days of the Gold rush. The trail provides the opportunity to view wildlife, an old abandoned prospector cabin, and a flavor of the past.
Overview of the Trail:
The first 3 miles of the trail, which is situated in the Big Eldorado Creek drainage is boggy and difficult to traverse when not frozen. The upper portion of the trail located in the Big Eldorado Creek drainage has a good year-round surface and is steep but still very bikable.
At about six miles (waypoint N 64 59.447 W 147 40.210) the trail opens up to a buried Pipeline Right of Way (ROW). Here the trail continues on along the Pipeline ROW for a half a mile. At this point (waypoint N 64 59.052 W 147 40.555) the trail leaves the Pipeline ROW and turns right to attain the East Ridge along the Big Eldorado Creek Drainage.
The East Ridge Portion of this ride (also known as the Waterford Pack Trail) is 2 miles of a gentle downhill trail riding. Although this portion of the trail is usually good year round (except during breakup and after a heavy rain) it is absolutely excellent in the winter. Riding this ridge is probably the best two miles of biking anywhere in Interior Alaska. The trail ends at the intersection of Waterford Road and Molly Road. Following Waterford downhill for about a mile and you come to Goldstream Road. Take a right onto Goldstream Road (which has a wide shoulder suitable for biking) and in 2.5 miles you will be back at the trailhead.
